Ketamine is a chemical that functions as an NMDA receptor antagonist that interacts with brain neurotransmitters. When ketamine is introduced into a patients' body, it increases the amount of glutamate between neurons, which activates connections in the AMPA receptor. By strengthening connections between brain regions and fostering neuronal growth, ketamine creates and reconfigures brain's communication pathways, therefore transforming depressive thoughts into more positive thought patterns.
Spravato® is a treatment that administers esketamine (half of the ketamine molecule) in a nasal spray form by clinical staff that are certified under the SPRAVATO® REMS. Currently, it is the only FDA-approved ketamine therapy accessible to patients and is covered by most insurances.
